Design

The amazing bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is Canada’s largest bird of prey and the only eagle exclusive to North America. The adult boasts a wingspan of more than 6 feet, a standing height of around 3 feet, and an average weight of over 15 pounds. Females are generally larger than males.

This renowned raptor is noted for its distinctive dark-feathered body and white-feathered head, large golden eyes, bright yellow beak, and massive yellow claws armed with sharp, powerful talons. It builds the largest nest of any North American bird and the largest tree nests ever recorded for any animal species: up to 13 feet deep,8 feet wide, and 1.1 tons in weight.

The reverse is designed by Canadian artist Claudio D’Angelo and features a stunning image of the bald eagle in flight, its wings forward and claws flexed as it prepares to pounce upon prey below. Viewed from its left side, the fierce eagle is a portrait of power in motion. Its sharp, curved beak sits partway open while it tilts its iconic white head slightly downward to fix its gaze on its quarry. The obverse features an image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
